CORNWALL: AN ANCIENT COUNTRY INSIDE AN EMPIRE by Jorge Guerrero Avilés

Located at the Southwest of the English Island, lies an ancient region, considered by their habitants as a country inside an empire; a land where the legend says that King Arthur lived and the inspiration for Shakespeare to write King Lear.

Cornwall is a
unitary authority and ceremonial county of England, within the United Kingdom. It is bordered to the north and west by the Celtic Sea, to the south by the English Channel, and to the east by the county of Devon, over the River Tamar. Cornwall has an area of 3,563 km2 (1,376 sq mi). The administrative center and only city is Truro.

Cornish people had 500 years of being arrived to the peninsula before the Anglo-Saxons did. Romans exploited stain and carbon from the land and mixed culture with the Celts.

Indeed, geographical and politically, Cornwall does not appear as a Country. They just form part of England and English people see this side of the land just like a good touristic point known as English Finis Terre, but without economic influence as the Central o Northern region of the country.

In contrast to this, population want to be independent and their habitants do not feel English. They refer that they are Cornish and if they are considered as English is because of hard luck in war. They say “Cornwall is Britain but no England.” People who defend this point of view argument that they have a name in other languages as countries certainly have. This place is named Corwall in English, Kernow in Gaelic, or Cornualles in Spanish.

Cornwall has its own identity, its own flag, a black background with a White Cross that is remitted to Saint Piran, County’s Patron who has a national holiday.

Their own language is Cornish, a Brythonic Celtic language and a recognized minority language of the United Kingdom.

Cornish traditions have passed beyond the Atlantic. A good example is the case of 3500 Cornish immigrants that came to the Mexican State of Hidalgo from 1824 to beginning of 20th century and they shared to that place their culinary traditions, mining techniques, wrestling and the football game, that is now a days the most popular sport in our country.

From my personal point of view, Cornwall does not need to fight for its separation as Northern Ireland. It could be a tremendous mistake because they do not have the resources and the economic sponsors to win a war versus England. They could lose their identity trying to fight in an epic process. Instead of this and analyzing the situation, for Corwall is more convenient to be considered as a State inside the United Kingdom like Scotland or Wales.

Taking everything into consideration Cornwall does not need frontlines to be considered as a different region. This county, as a Celtic land with invaluable traditions and survived legends like King Arthur or Tristan e Isolde, had passed the wall of time and location.
Finally, It is concerned to its habitants emphasize their traditions and historic values to obtain a cultural independence in a peaceful process that can identify Cornwall to the rest of United Kingdom and where the humanity must be the winner of this conflict
